Anvil from a piece of rail
One of the necessary attributes of a home master is a small anvil. It is useful to anyone who loves to do everything on their own: often you need to level some piece of iron, which requires a flat and heavy surface on which you can safely tap with a hammer or a small sledge hammer. The easiest and most affordable way to make an anvil with your own hands - use a piece of rail. The metal from which the rails are made does not flatten from impacts and can withstand virtually any load. An important factor - the rail has a convenient shape for the manufacture of anvil, which explains the popularity of this material. The only negative is that metal is rather difficult to process, so you have to tinker. Also at this stage a metal plate is welded to the second workpiece of the rail from the end part so that the rail stably stands vertically. The next step is to remove all the burrs with the help of the Bulgarian metal flows, which remained after the work of the gas cutter. Particular attention is paid to the working part and the processing of the pointed edge: it is necessary to make it as smooth and symmetrical as possible. ru / uploads / posts / 2018-08 / medium / 1535026543_3.jpg "style =" max-width: 100%; " alt="Anvil from a piece of rail"> Now they start to polish the working surface - the rail head.To do this, it is better to use a grinding machine, as the disc of the Bulgar can leave deep furrows, which then will be difficult to grind. When the anvil is polished, it is necessary to drill holes in its sole (2-3) on each side, as well as in the metal plate of the second part. Then, on a wooden workpiece (chump), a narrow part is cut with a saw to secure the counterweight, after which all elements are screwed with powerful self-tapping screws with a wrench head to a wooden base. Tip! In the working upper part of the anvil (rail head), you can drill a hole that will make the sound of a blow on the anvil not so ringing. In addition, this hole is sometimes useful when processing some shaped parts. That turned out to be an anvil, which can be useful for various leveling works. In addition to the main working part, you can use the counterweight: at the end of the rail it is convenient to edit small parts that are inconvenient to hold on a smooth surface.
Materials and tools neededMaterials will require two sections of a rail at least 300 mm long (one piece will be the anvil itself, the second used as a counterweight), a metal plate for the footboard counterweight. You will also need a wooden block (a piece of tree trunk), which will be used as a support and a working table for the anvil, powerful self-tapping screws for fastening the rail to the working surface. This option makes the anvil mobile: if necessary, it can be pulled out of the garage or workshop into the courtyard and work in the fresh air, which can not be done if you fix it on a metal workbench. In addition, the sound of a blow to a metal surface fixed on a wooden base is much more muffled and does not “hit the ears.” The diameter of the chocks: the more the better, because the anvil will be more massive and stable. The height is chosen individually and depends on the height of the master. Optimally, the height of the future anvil was just above the belt: it is at this height that it is most convenient to work with a hammer. Tools will require:
- Bulgarian with discs for metal.
- Drill and drill bits for metal.
- Gas cutter.
- Grinder or nozzles on a drill for grinding metal.
- Electric or gasoline saw for machining a wooden block.
Making anvil from railsSoHaving prepared all the necessary materials and tools, you can proceed directly to the manufacture of a mobile anvil. Important! All work should be done in goggles or a mask so that flying sparks do not damage the eyes during metal processing. Using a gas cutter, the sole and neck are slightly trimmed at the first workpiece. Then, on the one hand, the rail head is sharpened, which will be the working surface of the anvil. This is done to make it convenient to work with metal of various shapes.
