Brutus AW13 Collection
Brutus AW13 Collection
In 2009, classic British label Brutus revived their iconic ‘Trimfit’ shirt with the help of Jonathan Freedman, son and nephew of original founders Keith and Alan Freedman. For those that aren’t already aware, Brutus was founded in 1966 and quickly became one of the major labels adopted by the Mod, Skinhead and Suedehead movements.
Whilst their Trimfit shirt has become the most recognisable garment produced by the brand, selling millions in the seventies, the label were originally founded as Brutus Jeans – and for autumn/winter 2013, denim has finally been reintroduced back into the Brutus range.
The original Brutus denim piece was a four pocket, flared brushed jean – the popular style of the era. However, it was their manufacturing process that set them apart from other British labels as they became the first UK brand to endorse Japanese Selvedge denim, now the most sought after and desirable material within the denim industry.
Although, thankfully, there are no flare cuts featured within the AW13 collection, Brutus have stayed true to their roots by utilising archive pieces to inspire the new range. Dark indigo Japanese denim is featured heavily and highlighted in the accompanying lookbook by the double denim outfit, which consists of the classic Gold Denim Jacket and Brutus Gold 505 Cut Jeans.
Whilst the release of these denim garments will undoubtedly attract a wealth of interest, the label have also produced a new collection of shirts. Coming in twenty different tartan checks, they are shown off to full effect within the lookbook. Styled with on trend bomber jackets, timeless Harringtons and even a blazer, the versatility that a classic Brutus shirt can offer your wardrobe is plain to see.
The Brutus denim revival marks a milestone in the history of the menswear industry. The brand were once the biggest producer of denim in the UK, outselling Levi’s and Wrangler, with over 5 million pairs of Brutus Jeans sold per year. The brand even had their own chart topping single that was used for a David Bailey directed advertisement, which can be viewed .
With such a rich and successful history, it’s advised to keep a close eye on the re-development of Brutus as they look to repeat their former success.
