Caduet is the brand name of a combination medicine that contains the drugs Norvasc (amlodipine) and Lipitor (atorvastatin).

It's used to treat high blood pressure and chest pain.

Caduet is also given to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke, and additional complications in people with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions.

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow.

Atorvastatin is a statin. It blocks an enzyme in the liver that's responsible for making cholesterol.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Caduet in 2004. It's marketed by Pfizer, Inc.

Caduet Warnings

Before taking Caduet, tell your doctor if you have, or have ever had:

  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease, a heart attack, or another heart problem
  • A thyroid disorder
  • Seizures
  • Low blood pressure
  • An electrolyte imbalance
  • A severe infection or illness
  • A stroke
  • Allergies to any medication

Also, let your doctor know if you drink more than two alcoholic beverages daily before starting treatment with Caduet.

If you have heart problems, the amlodipine in Caduet may — in rare cases — worsen your chest pain or increase your risk of a heart attack, either when you first start taking the drug or when you increase your dose.

Also in rare instances, Caduet may cause a condition that results in the breakdown of skeletal muscle and leads to kidney failure. This problem is more likely to occur in older adults, people with kidney disease, and those with a poorly controlled, underactive thyroid.

Your doctor will recommend that you follow a specific diet plan while taking Caduet.

Avoid consuming foods that are high in fat or cholesterol. This medicine won't be as effective if you don't adopt a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Tell your doctor you're taking Caduet before having any type of medical or dental procedure.

Use caution when exercising or experiencing hot weather. Heavy sweating can cause water loss and lead to low blood pressure.

Your doctor will want to monitor you regularly to check your body's response to Caduet. Keep all appointments with your healthcare provider and laboratory.

Pregnancy and Caduet

Caduet may harm a fetus or cause birth defects if it's taken during pregnancy.

Don't take this medicine if you're pregnant or might become pregnant.

Use an effective form of birth control if you could become pregnant during your treatment with Caduet.

Tell your doctor right away if you think you might be pregnant while you're taking this medicine.

Don't take Caduet if you're breastfeeding a baby.
