Reliable adhesive for slate do-it-yourself

Slate - the material for covering the roofs is quite good and practical. And relatively inexpensive, in comparison with other, more modern and stylish coatings. But he has one good minus; it is painfully fragile. Especially after some time. As the slate on the roof ages, cracks and holes appear in it. In order to avoid these troubles, it is necessary, at least once every six months (in spring, after the snow melts and in the fall, after the leaves are covered with trees), to clean the roof with a broom or brush. It is even more necessary if trees grow near the building. If this is not done, fallen leaves, needles and small twigs from the trees, rot over on the floor, and green moss and fungus appears and begins to spread, resulting in slate decay and cracks and holes are formed on it.

By observing these simple actions, you will noticeably extend the life of this coating. However, sooner or later, cracks in the slate will still appear. And here I want to advise one of the ways how to eliminate a crack, or a small hole in a slate sheet, if there is no way to replace it.

You'll need

  • Gasoline (I used the AI-92 brand).
  • Polyfoam.
  • Small nylon mesh (fiberglass can be).
  • Brush.
  • Scissors.
  • Solvent.
  • Duster.
  • Hard brush.

Preparing glue

First, prepare our homemade glue, not forgetting the precautionary measures; Make sure there is no open flame, because we will work with gasoline! And try not to inhale gasoline vapors - this may affect your well-being not for the better! It is more convenient to work, in my opinion, if the glue is in any dish, with a wide neck, like a plastic bucket from under mayonnaise. So, pour two hundred and fifty milligrams of gasoline into a measuring cup (the higher the octane number, the easier and faster the foam will dissolve in it) and pour it into a bucket.

I used gasoline 92nd,but since it is quite stale (I drained it from an old motorcycle), and probably exhausted, I had to splash in it another fifty milligrams of 646 solvent.Reliable adhesive for do-it-yourself slate
If you use fresh gasoline from the 92nd or 95th gas, it is not necessary to pour solvent into it - it will do an excellent job with foam plastic. Now we break the foam into suitable pieces of size, and send it to a bucket with gasoline. Dissolves the foam there almost instantly, effectively hissing and bubbling.

We continue to dissolve pieces of foam, until the resulting glue does not get a gray consistency, similar to organic wallpaper paste; the same viscous and thick enough to stay on the brush and, later, on the nylon net. Repairing the slate

Now you need to clean the place of gluing (the fields, five centimeters from the edges of the crack) with a stiff brush, , dust and sand. Next, we wet the cloth with a solvent and wipe the places, cleaned by the brush, where the glue will lay.

Apply a layer of glue to the treated edges of the crack.

We put a nylon net on the crack with glued edges. From the top we cover all this with glue. A reliable adhesive for slate with your own hands Now you need to wait two or three hours for the glue to dry out a little. Yes, and catch your breath during this time from gasoline fumes! After the indicated time, we go back up, put a fresh layer of glue on the slightly dried glue and put the mesh in the second layer to fix the result, so to speak. And now on top again, thoroughly, and not sparing the glue, apply the last layer of glue. Polystyrene, dissolved in gasoline, tightly clings to the slate, so that no bad weather can tear it away and wash it away! You can, if you wish, until it has begun to dry out, sprinkle the whole thing with dry cement on top, so that the repaired part of the roof is not conspicuous if it is in a prominent place. On this our work is over. The rest is a matter of time. Seven to nine hours will be enough for the weathering of gasoline vapors from the glue and its further solidification. Do not forget to know the weather forecast for the next 24 hours before starting work, as excessive moisture will not be good for the benefit of such work. This repair will extend the service life of slate, at least for another couple of years. Well, or until it becomes possible to change the old coating to a new one.
