How to deal with book dust?

At one time during the Soviet era, almost every family had at least a small library in their home, and the country's population proudly bore the title of the reader in the world. Today, paper books are increasingly losing ground in favor of electronic media.

And although there is still a small army of true book lovers who prefer to leaf through the pages of their favorite works with their own hands, home libraries are becoming rarities. Young people less and less removes volumes from the shelves, but in vain. This should be done if only to prevent the accumulation of book dust, which is a powerful allergen.

What is the danger?

Book dust that regularly settles not only on furniture, but also directly on the volumes themselves, often causes such diseases as:

  • allergic rhinitis, the symptoms of which are: redness of the mucous membranes of the eyes, sneezing, runny nose, cough, sore throat, easily confused with manifestations of ARVI;
  • bronchial asthma;
  • Quincke edema, which can be fatal without timely medical care.

The reason for this lies in the microscopic parasites contained in the dust on the bookshelves. We are talking about false scorpions and book ticks, whose waste products not only spoil the pages of folios, but also cause significant damage to human health. In this case, the danger increases with the aging of the publication. No wonder that employees of the archives are obliged to work with books in a respirator and disposable gloves.

In order to avoid severe allergic reactions, doctors recommend not keeping paper works in the home library that are more than ten years old. In fact, with proper care for the volumes, such radical methods will not have to be resorted to. And for this you need to know how to get rid of book dust.

Practical advice

To read your favorite books only for pleasure, you should follow simple recommendations on their proper storage and care:

  • First of all, you should take care of a cozy book "house". To less dust settled on folios, they should be stored in glazed cabinets and shelves.Since paper editions do not tolerate exposure to direct sunlight, it is better to have a cabinet perpendicular to the window. At the same time, the optimum temperature for storing books is 18-21 ° C at a humidity not exceeding 55%.
  • To minimize the area for sedimentation of dust, the volume should be put in one row, strictly vertically, not overwhelming to the side. In order for them to “breathe,” you need to leave some free space between the books.
  • If the works are exhibited on a high rack, the top row should be covered with plastic wrap. Below it will not be visible, so it will not spoil the aesthetics of the room. But with the function of additional dust protection cope perfectly. You only need to wash the film weekly.
  • In order to avoid the appearance of mold and moths in the cabinets, you can use the "grandmother's" recipes. Thus, the traditional folk remedies for the elimination of these misfortunes are activated carbon tablets and tangerine peels.
  • At least a couple of times a year should be made general cleaning of racks. Ideally, this should be done every season. To begin, cabinets must be thoroughly vacuumed using special thin nozzles.Start collecting dust is from the top shelves, going down. First, you should vacuum the top of the books, then their roots, and only then - the back and the shelves themselves.
  • After removing the main part of the dust, all the volumes need to be removed from the cabinets and additionally process the bindings with a slightly damp microfiber cloth. As an antiseptic, you can use a 2-3% pharmacy solution of formalin, wetting a rag in it. Processed books should be left in open space until completely dry. If there are not too many publications, they can be taken out onto the street and shaken out by hand, closing them with sharp claps.
  • Shelves also need to wipe with a cloth moistened with a special antiseptic for furniture. It not only eliminates dust residues well, but also prevents its early sedimentation. After complete drying of the cabinets, the books are returned to the site.
  • In order for dust to accumulate less on book shelving, it is necessary to regularly ventilate the room and make its wet cleaning. In order to reduce possible “dust collectors”, it is worth minimizing textile excesses in the form of carpets, pillows, soft toys, etc.Ideally, in a room with a library there should be a minimum of things that can be easily and quickly processed with a damp cloth.
  • Live plants that can be placed on the windowsill of the room are good at fighting dust. Also, if you have financial opportunities, you should purchase a household humidifier or an air purifier, which contains anti-dust filters.

Regularly observing these simple rules, you not only save yourself and your home from an allergen, but also extend the life of your favorite works.
