What is bimetal

Bimetal is a composite material in which one metal, usually cheaper, is coated with another, more expensive, with better performance characteristics. If the number of metals in the composite is 3, then it is called a trimetal. A composition of a larger number of metals is not used.

The use of bimetals


Anticorrosion coating. Wherever it is necessary to coat a corrosion-weak metal, use copper, nickel, silver or another coating with superior performance properties. Such bimetal is actively used for the manufacture of corrosion-resistant equipment of oil and gas and nuclear energy equipment, chemical utensils, kitchen utensils and clad coins.
Thermosensitive elements. By selecting a metal with different coefficients of thermal expansion, it is possible to achieve a bimetal, which will be deformed in the direction of a metal with a lower coefficient of thermal expansion.
Antifriction coatings. Such a bimetal will be both cheap and resistant to abrasion.

Methods of making bimetals


Galvanic. When electricity passes through a solution, Faraday processes occur, for example, metal is precipitated. Selecting a certain composition of the electrolyte, the temperature of the solution, the composition of the solution, achieve deposition on the surface of a metal coating with desired properties. For example, the simplest electrolyte for precipitating a shiny copper coating should contain copper sulfate, sulfuric acid and gelatin. The process is carried out at room temperature with a current of 1-5 A / dm2.
Thermal spraying. The metal is transferred to the dispersed state and is supplied by a gas or plasma stream to the substrate, on which it is condensed.
Surfacing by electric or plasma heating.

Explosive welding. Two rolled sheets of metal are arranged in parallel. On the one hand, a controlled explosion is carried out, which brings the two sheets into close contact. Welding occurs due to simultaneous deformation.

Bimetal flaws


The main disadvantage of bimetals is electrochemical corrosion, which occurs at the ends, where both metals are simultaneously accessible to the external environment.But, if the electrode potential of the coating is less than that of the base metal, then the coating also provides tread protection.
